Foden
Edwin Foden Sons & Co Ltd, founded in 1887, produced steam powered vehicles from 1901 through to the 1960s. They became famous for their steam wagons which were made until the early 1930s when punishing weight regulations and financial penalties forced them out of commercial service. However, some were still recorded as being in service until as late as 1963. The 1931 breakaway of Edwin’s son, E.R. Foden, carried the name into the world of diesel transport and went on to become a major truck manufacturer, the name only being dropped as recently as 1998 in favour of DAF by its new American parent company, Paccar.
